In this episode I cover the top reasons couples completely blow their wedding budget plus my top tips for taking back control. Here’s a quick summary:

  1. They never actually set an official budget in the first place

Sit down and figure out how much you actually have to spend - you need a total budget and one broken down by category!

My Free Wedding Planning 101 Workshop walks you through exactly how to create your budget and allocate it between the different categories:

2. They book a wedding venue that is too expensive

If you book an expensive venue, it is VERY hard to make it up in the other categories. Be sure you complete the workshop and worksheets above so you know exactly how much you have to spend!

Once you know your budget, my Questions to Ask Your Wedding Venue Worksheets will walk you through everything you need to know when you are booking your wedding venue. Download the Ultimate Wedding Planning Workbook to get access to them:

3. They do much DIY

There are a lot of wedding DIY’s that can end up costing more than if you just booked a professional. Be sure you layout all of the costs before you decide whether to DIY or hire a pro!

4. They don’t set priorities up front or think about what is most important

You need to know what is important to you as soon as possible in the planning process. This way you can allocate more of your budget to these categories from items that are less important to you.

5. They invite too many guests

Each headcount can cost a lot! You aren’t only paying for your guests dinner and drinks, but also chairs, tables, place settings, cake etc. It all adds up quickly!

6. They fall into the social media comparison trap

It’s ok to scroll through weddings on Pinterest and Instagram, just be intentional when you are doing it! Know that the weddings on there can run between 6 and 7 figures - do NOT compare your wedding to those. Social media is for inspiration only.

2. Create a Vision -

What is the goal here?! Write out, in detail, the wedding of your dreams!

3. Create Your Budget -

on paper. Not in your brain! If you try to do this all in your head, it is not going to relieve any wedding planning stress. In fact, it will probably create more.

My Free Wedding Planning 101 Workshop walks you through exactly how to create your vision & budget:

5. Get some self-awareness -

Start noticing when you are getting upset or triggered by something and take a beat to look at why that might be. My favorite books for cultivating self-awareness:

6. Get a system in place with your partner to work through the shit

Setup a meeting to discuss all things wedding planning that includes a space to work through any upsets. My favorite resource for setting this up: Marriage Meetings by Marcia Naomi Berger

8. Stop trying to make your family and friends be how you want them to be

I know you had huge expectations for how this was going to go and it is SO frustrating and disheartening when they don’t go that way. Cultivate your own self-awareness to be able to have some compassion and handle your shit when you can.

9. Lay out expectations with every major player in the wedding planning process -

have conversations with your mom, new mother-in-law, fathers, best friends etc. to tell them your hopes for how they will be involved in the planning process. Set the stage for open communication and for this process to bring you closer in every relationship.
